‘Zootopia’ Trailer, News: Disney's Animation Tops Box Office Records
The lack of competition in the animated genre propelled "Zootopia" to the top of the box office heap.
The latest Disney animation--which further proved that the studio has reclaimed its old mojo--reportedly raked in about $75 million during the opening weekend.
"It's the highest three-day opening ever for Disney Animation, topping "Frozen's" $67.4 million, and the fourth biggest March debut ever," reported the Associated Press.
"Zootopia" raked in a total of $233.8 million in box office receipts. Foreign sales comprise more than half of the total, or $158,800,000.
Meanwhile, Dave Hollis, Disney's distribution chief, explained the stellar box office showing of "Zootopia" to the lack of competition, plus the studio's decision to overhaul its business model on the backs of Pixar's John Lasseter and Ed Catmull.
"They brought a focus on quality. They recognize that quality is the best business plan," he told Variety.
According to Box Office Mojo, "Zootopia's" box office showing is no fluke. The Disney animation is expected to rake in more dollars especially with its 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is sure to generate more interest.
"Zootopia played well in its fourth weekend in international release where its cume has grown to $158.8 million, giving it a $232.5 million global cume to date. New territories this weekend included China ($24m), Russia ($7.9m) and Germany ($6.2m)," it added.
In recent years, the Chinese market proved to be the game changer as movie studios managed to rake in the profit even after a paltry box office showing in North America. Disney's "Zootopia" might just continue its upward trajectory buoyed by the China and Russia.
