Xiaomi Mi 5 Latest News, Rumors: New Smartphone Packs Fingerprint Scanner?

Having conquered the domestic market, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is now concentrating on the Indian market by launching affordable and efficient handsets. Following the release of Mi 4i in India last week, the tech company is now reported to usher in its next flagship smartphone Mi 5, the successor to Mi 4. Moreover, Xiaomi is planning to incorporate enhanced security measures by equipping the Mi 5 with fingerprint scanning tech with a view to keep pace with its competitors.

IB Times reports that while still there is no convincing evidence that Xiaomi's next flagship smartphone will pack a fingerprint scanner, a recent patent filing by the company with the Chinese authorities has given some credibility to the rumor. The filing in China's State Intellectual Property Office, which was obtained by MyDrivers, states that the smartphone's capacitive buttons are likely to accommodate the new technology. However, this seems somewhat surprising, because usually a fingerprint scanner is integrated within physical keys in handsets - like in the case of Samsung Galaxy S6, Apple iPhone 6, and others.

According Mobiletor, the patent filing further reveals that the embedded sensor as well as its components will be shielded by an additional layer of glass - something similar to Apple's iPhone 6, which is covered by the device's Home button with Sapphire glass.

At the same time, none of the internal documents of Xiaomi mentions about Mi 5. However, it is widely rumored that the Chinese tech company is likely to have the Mi 4 successor coming soon. It is expected that the new handset will be released in 2015 fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that the purported Mi 5 smartphone will sport either a 5.2-inch Quad HD or 2K display having 1440 x 2560 pixel screen resolution. In addition, Xiaomi is likely to use a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 SoC to power up the smartphone along with Adreno 420 and 3GB RAM.

According to rumors, the Mi 5 will be available in two variants of Mi 5 - one with 16GB and the second with 64GB storage. It is expected to pack a 3,600mAh battery. The device is likely to boast a 16MP rear sensor and a 8MP front sensor with the latest technology.

However, these specifications are mere rumors until Xiaomi confirms the existence of its next flagship smartphone.
