'Xena: Warrior Princess' News: Reboot of 'Xena: Warrior Princess' In The Works

Twenty years after Xena: Warrior Princess first appeared on television as a Hercules spinoff series, the hit show could be coming back to the small screen.

Sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that NBC and NBC Universal International are preparing to reboot the favorite action adventure drama, which featured Lucy Lawless.

The plans are still in the very early stages, as the studios are still looking for a writer to come on board the project.

The original executive producers of the show, Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi also have some involvement in the project, which will be a "modern reboot."

It is unclear whether Lawless will have any role in the new show, although sources say that insiders would love to have Lawless play a role both behind the scenes and on screen.

The studio is hoping that the drama will be ready for 2016, but it is still too early to know whether it will be a limited run, like the reboot of Fox's 24 with just thirteen episodes, or whether there will be an order for a full season.

Producers are apparently looking for a superhero who is both sophisticated and smart, in order to appeal to the new generation.

The original Xena: Warrior Princess was produced by Studios USA and international producers Universal Worldwide Television.

It was also distributed by Universal Worldwide Television. Xena ran in syndication for six seasons total, beginning in September 1995 and ending in June 2001.

After producers realized how popular Lawless' character was on Hercules, they chose to build an entire series around the Amazon warrior and her companion, Renee O'Connor's Gabrielle.
