'X-Men' TV Series News: Project Still in Negotiations
Earlier this year it was announced that Fox was in negotiations to kickstart an 'X-Men' television series, however for one reason or another there hasn't been much development.
"[For] X-Men, we're in negotiations with Marvel. We're hopeful we'll be able to announce something soon. We're not closed on a deal yet but it's something we're definitely pursuing," Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden told THR on Thursday at the TCA's.
Fox has owned the rights to the film franchise for many years, however Marvel owns the comic rights, making the television realm something the studio hopes to crossover in. While a script is in development for the series, Marvel would have to officially sign off for them to go into production.
The show is also reported to standalone from anything Marvel is doing but will share a universe with what Fox is doing with their X-Men cinematic world.
"The characters from the X-Men franchise are with Fox on the feature side so we won't be including Marvel characters that are at ABC with Disney," Walden clarified. "This will be exclusively the franchise as it has existed at Fox."
Marvel may be concerned with possible overlap, as they have already put into action their plans to take over television.
"While conversations to bring the franchise to the small screen are underway, sources indicate a deal is far from complete, with Marvel - which owns the comic rights - still having to sign off on the deal. The comic book powerhouse is based at Disney, with ABC shows including Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter on the network and five upcoming straight-to-series programs in the works there," writes THR.
The live action series is being written by Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who worked on 'Star Trek 3.'
