'X-Men' Movie Franchise Cast News: Jennifer Lawrence Parts Ways with the Mutant Mystique
In an interview with MTV at the premiere of her new film with Bradley Cooper, Serena, Jennifer Lawrence said that X-Men Apocalypse will see the end of her portrayal of Mystique.
"It is my last one, actually," said Lawrence referencing additional franchise films down the line.
The "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Hunger Games" actress has hinted that the third film for the First Class arc of the X-Men would be her last one for the franchise in past interview as well.
Writer-producer Simon Kinberg has been quoted to praise Lawrence's performance on the character. Some even suggest that he and others could be doing a spin off film that features Mystique and Mystique alone. This could Lawrence back to reprise her role, but it is unlikely.
"It's not a shock to hear that Lawrence and 'X-Men' are parting ways, even if it's difficult to swallow; her work as Mystique has been one of the major highlights of the rebooted franchise ever since 'X-Men: First Class'. But with the casting of new mutants Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm, and the time-altering ending of 'Days of Future Past', it sure seems like a new era of "X-Men" is about to begin, while the reign of James McAvoy's Xavier, Michael Fassbender's Magneto, Nicholas Hoult's Beast and Lawrence's Mystique draws to its natural end," MTV's Josh Wigler wrote in the report.
X-Men Apocalypse will take place in the 1980s and brings newcomers to the franchise such "Game of Throne's" Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tree of Life's" Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, "American Horror Story's" Evan Peters as Quicksilver and "The Road's" Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler.
The third installment of the franchise is scheduled to hit theaters May 27, 2016.
