'X-Men: Gambit' Film Release Date, Cast Rumors: Channing Tatum to Star in Upcoming Marvel Movie

It would seem recent rumors have come to fruition as it has been officially confirmed that actor Channing Tatum will be portraying X-Men's Gambit in his own solo film.

Tatum has previously expressed, that he's not only a fan of the character, but that he wanted to actually play the character at one point.

Fox has confirmed the release date for October 7, 2016 along with Tatum taking to Twitter to tease the film's cast. The actor tweeted, "How do you say October 7, 2016 in Cajun?" on Monday.

The character Gambit is fairly well known in his own circle of X-Men and Marvel fans, but he's a bit more obscure to the general public than some of the mutants adapted to the big screen, such as Wolverine.

People Magazine offers an accurate description of the character for those unfamiliar:

"Gambit (real name: Remy Etienne LeBeau) first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #266, and as previously mentioned, is a professional thief and gambler hailing from Louisiana. His mutant power grants him the ability to charge things with kinetic energy and turn any object into an explosive. He uses playing cards, because he likes to gamble (per the name) and also because these are comic books, where wildly impractical weapons are industry standard."

Gambit was previously portrayed by actor Taylor Kitsch in 2009's 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'. The actor's performance for the highly anticipated character was less than favored by fans so recasting was highly necessary.

To reboot the character successfully, the studio and actor will have to take a unique and fresh spin on him. On that note, Tatum expressed his thoughts to MTV:

"We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We're obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but maybe not for the first one. We kinda want to introduce this character in a different way. When you try to do something different, you never know right off the bat what that is."
