'X-Men: Apocalypse' New Cast News: 'The Road' Star Kodi Smit-McPhee Joins Mutants in Nightcrawler Role
'X-Men: Apocalypse' director Bryan Singer has just confirmed that he will bring back Nightcrawler to the movie franchise, which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2016. He further said that Kodi Smit-McPhee will be portraying the character. He will now be joining the existing cast members, which includes Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawrence.
IBTimes reports that Singer revealed the news on his Instagram account on Feb. 17, posting, "Excited to welcome @kodismitmcphee to the cast of #XmenApocalypse as young #Nightcrawler."
Meanwhile, Variety reports that earlier the 18-year-old actor starred in movies like 'The Road' and lent his voice for the lead character in the animated movie 'ParaNorman.' Recently, he also featured in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.' Many people also expected Kodi Smit-McPhee to portray the popular Marvel comics' character Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot of the studio, but eventually it did not materialize.
For the uninitiated, Nightcrawler is a favorite character in the X-Men universe. Similar to Mystique (portrayed by Lawrence), Nichtcrawler is cursed to have blue skin. He also has a tail, adhesive hands and feet. In addition, he is capable of teleporting. Nightcrawler's character was first portrayed by Allan Cumming on the big screen. Cumming portrayed the character in the 2003 film "X-Men 2," which fans considered to be among the best installments in the 'X-Men' franchise, which narrated the story of how the X-Men met the blue mutant for the first time.
In 'X-Men: Apocalypse,' fans will possibly see Nightcrawler in a different avatar, as the team is likely to rediscover him at an earlier date.
'X-Men: Apocalypse' is set in the 1980s. While the younger cast of characters were already established in 'X-Men: First Class,' it will now be easier for Nightcrawler to enter the new generation of mutant heroes.
'X-Men: Apocalypse' is scheduled for release on May 27, 2016.
