'X-Files' New Cast News: 'Community' Star Joel McHale to Play Tad O'Malley
Actor Joel McHale may be moving on from 'Community' faster than some may have thought with his recent casting in the upcoming 'X-Files' revival series.
McHale is signed on to guest star as Tad O'Malley, "the anchor of a popular conservative Internet news network who becomes an unlikely ally for Fox Mulder," according to Deadline.
'X-Files' stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have already been confirmed to reprise their roles in the limited series, along with some other notable names.
"In addition to Duchovny and Anderson, back in their signature roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, McHale also is joining original cast member Mitch Pileggi, reprising his role as Walter Skinner. The new X-Files chapter, shepherded by series' creator Chris Carter, will launch behind Fox's coverage of the NFC championship game in January. 20th Century Fox TV and Ten Thirteen Productions are producing," writes Deadline.
McHale has classically been known to be featured in comedic and lighthearted roles, making this peculiar casting something his fans are looking forward to.
The limited series is scheduled for six episodes, and while Duchovny is only planning for one season the show's overwhelming support and popularity may urge them to continue on with more.
"I would be open to doing another cycle. I don't know that I could do a 20-episode version of this show at this point in my life, and I don't know that Gillian could. But I think everybody is open ended on what happens after this. Certainly, we didn't bring it back with the idea of ending it," Duchovny stated in an earlier interview.
'X-Files' makes its return to TV in January 2016.
