World Series of Fighting News: WSOF Suspends Palhares, Strips Title

The World Series of Fighting (WSOF) has decided to suspend Rousimar Palhares and indefinitely strip him of his welterweight title following his controversial submission win over Jake Shields on Saturday.

Palhares was seen committing multiple fouls during his title fight against Shields, gouging the challenger's eyes and holding on to his kimura long after his opponent had tapped out.

"I don't think [Palhares] is a bad guy, but I just think he has mental problems and shouldn't be allowed to fight until he fixes them," WSOF vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz told Yahoo Sports.

As noted by Yahoo Sports, the WSOF has advised Palhares' team to send the fighter to a sports psychologist.

"We have had enough of it, "Abdel-Aziz said. "He's a nice guy, but he doesn't know when to turn it off and control himself. Those submission moves are dangerous and he can really hurt somebody or end their entire career. His team knows he needed help, and I have yet to see any improvement in him.

Palhares' MMA career has been marred with a slew of similar incidents in the past, and led to his dismissal from the UFC back in 2013.

"The 6th time Palhares held a submission past the tap. He should be banned, or at least given a lengthy suspension," UFC welterweight Cathal Pendred tweeted.

Tim Kennedy and TJ Grant, for their part, tweeted in favor of a lifetime ban for Palhares, while Hector Lombard gave subtler advice, tweeting "Bro, guy taps, let go"¦".

The WSOF enjoyed relative success for their Saturday event, especially in the face of stiff competition from UFC 190, as well as an ESPN boxing match between Danny Garcia and Paulie Malignaggi. But the event also had its downside apart from the Palhares controversy, with UFC fighters Khabib Nurmagamedov and Nate Diaz's camps brawling during the event.
