World's 'Oldest Person' Passes Away: Guinness World Record Title Holder, Misao Okawa, Dies at Age 117
Supercentenarian, Misao Okawa, considered by the Guinness World Record as the 'Oldest Person' has died as of the morning of April 1 due to heart failure, just a few weeks after her 117th birthday.
Employees who had looked after her had noted that she had stopped eating regularly prior to her passing.
Settled in a nursing home in Osaka, Japan, Okawa was surrounded by family and health care workers and attendants when she passed away. She had said previously on her birthday celebration that it seemed that her life was "rather short".
Workers in the nursing home were greatly saddened by this as Tomohiro Okada says, "She went so peacefully, as if she had just fallen asleep. We miss her a lot."
On Okawa's 117th birthday, she was asked about the secret to her long life. She replied curtly with "I wonder about that too."
When she had been part of an interview with The Japan Times about her life she had mentioned that "eating delicious things is a key to my longevity."
Agreeably, Okawa had a good appetite. Her favorite was eating ramen with udon noodles and sushi. She then advised to have enough sleep to have a long and healthy life.
Okawa was born on March 5, 1896 and was the fourth daughter of a kimono-maker. She married Yukio in 1919 and moved to Kobe to continue the business. Her husband died in 1931. They bore 2 daughters and 1 son. Now, she has survived a big family with 4 grand children and six great-grand children. The family now runs the Kimono shop in Osaka.
On the other side of the world, Gertrude Weaver, 116, of Arkansaw now succeeds the title of the World's Oldest Person after Okawa. She will be turning 117 on July 4.
Okawa has lived through three centuries, the invention of the airplane by the Wright Brothers, had seen four Japanese emperors, six British monarchs, and 20 U.S Presidents.
