'World Of Warcraft' Hit By New Scam? Scammer Tries To Run Script That Will Steal Players’ Gold
In line with Blizzard Entertainment's 2004 hit game "World of Warcaft," that still enjoys an enormous subscriber base, it has been revealed that a script scam is floating around that aims to steal players' gold.
A viral word-of-mouth chat script is reportedly spreading a scam, Vice Motherboard has learned. The news came from a Reddit thread posted by user MrNooby on July 6, where a user said that the scammer mimics well-respected player guilds or groups and sends private messages to targets.
According to MrNooby, the scammer claimed to be selling 13/13M with loot and mount on behalf of a top guild on their realm. It was added that every guild he impersonated was a guild with an "I" somewhere in the name and he actually made a guild with a capital "I" instead of the lowercase "i," as both show up the same in the game.
The scammer's modus operandi are to ask the victim to run do a /run command, along with the claim that the raid frames did not get messed up on the custom UI that the raiders used. As per MrNooby, running the script allowed the scammer to execute scripts via the whisper feature, which forces gamers to trade away their golds when he traded with them.
With the said operation, it is uncertain if the method requires an add-on to work, since the scammer asks to disable all add-ons first prior to running the script. The scammer is also revealed to show up with different toons every time, imitating different guilds at a time. Furthermore, the scammer is said to carry out the trick on several realms.
To be secure, Reddit user and thread moderator phedre wrote that players should never run a script given by someone in "World of Warcraft." In addition, players should ensure that the run for in game gold from a guild should be ensured to be from a respected guild and that it actually was that guild.
Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, "World of Warcraft" was released on Nov. 23, 2004.
