'Wonder Woman' Cast News: Lead Actress Gal Gadot Talks Backlash for Women in the Acting Business

Taking on a superhero role has to be tough, especially in a female leading role. Actress Gal Gadot has an even larger responsibility as she will not not only be portraying the signature female DC heroine, but will be the first actress to hold a lead in a superhero film.

Gadot speaks on the experience of being cast and how much she covets the role in an interview with Israel This Week.

She speaks on almost being at wit's end in acting as she'd been consistently denied roles in major films. Gadot finally received her big break after a secret audition for the role as Wonder Woman.

She spoke on the criticism she received from her casting:

"They said that I was too skinny and my [breasts] were too small. When I was younger, I would take criticism really hard. But it mostly amused me. They asked me here, in Israel, if I have eating disorders and why am I so skinny. They said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick. I can take anything. It's just empty talk. I understand that part of what I'm doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire."

Gadot then adds on how excited she is for the role and how much it resonates with her actual character.

"Playing Wonder Woman is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can't describe to you how much I wanted to play this character without even knowing I wanted to play her. I don't want to play a damsel in distress that needs to be saved. I don't like it when women in the movies are shown as the victims. I always thought that if I could send out a message I want to show the strong side of a woman and how she can handle tough situations."

Gadot is due to debut in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' but will helm her own solo film in 2017.
