Bo Ryan News: Wisconsin Coach Reconsiders Retirement Plans
Last June, Wisconsin men's basketball coach Bo Ryan announced his intentions of retiring after the coming season. And during a recent interview, it appears, he is no longer as certain about his plans, as reported by CBSSports.
"Everybody kind of thinks they know when they're ready to retire; I'm not totally sure," Ryan said following a golf tournament Wednesday. "Barry [Alvarez, Wisconsin athletic director] said I could change my mind at any time. I haven't submitted any papers yet. I haven't submitted anything. So I might stay another four or five [years]."
I his June announcement, Ryan said he took some time after the national championship game to think about the decision to retire, and after doing so, that he considered retiring this summer, or coach one more season.
"I've decided to coach one more season with the hope that my longtime assistant Greg Gard eventually becomes the head coach at Wisconsin. I'm looking forward to another year with our program, including our players, my terrific assistant coaches, our office staff and everyone who supports Wisconsin basketball here in Madison, around the state and across the country," Ryan said back in June.
He clarified that he made the announcement because he wasn't able to tell the recruits that he could not guarantee that he'll be staying four years, adding that he also wanted to be fair to his staff and Alvarez.
"I wouldn't be the first guy in the country that ever thought about retirement and then changed their mind," Ryan said. "I'm not doing anything revolutionary here."
Ryan has been the coach of the Badgers since 2001. As noted by CBSSports.com, the 67-year-old has won four Big Ten regular season titles, three Big Ten Tournament championships, and has never finished worse than fourth in the league during that span. He has also made the Final Four in the last two seasons.
