Windows 10 New Features News: Microsoft Announces Windows Hello Biometric Authentication Software
In a world where obtaining someone's password isn't very difficult, consumers are constantly looking towards technology to help them secure their electronic devices. On that note, Windows is currently working on the next best thing for security.
New software called Windows Hello, a feature for all devices running Windows 10, will allow users to log into their devices and account using biometric authentication for facial and iris recognition and fingerprint scanning rather than an easily stolen and forgettable password.
According to Extreme Tech, additional hardware and software could very well be required in order to run Windows Hello. A lot of their latest devices already have fingerprint readers, but a new computer or add-on will be added as far as the facial and iris recognition.
By using technology first found on the Xbox Kinect, Windows has developed a system that provides a secure log in without the use of passwords and without the risk of someone using a photo to access a Windows system.
The official Windows blog announced on Wednesday that all OEM systems incorporating the RealSense 3D Camera (F200) will support facial and iris unlock features as well as support to unlock the new Windows Passport.
Windows Passport is a single sign-in service. After a device authenticates a user's identity, Passport will allow access to sites, apps and services without typing a password. All the information accessed through Passport will with stored on a server. If someone were to ever get into a user's Windows 10 system, all they would get is a public encryption key that isn't of any use.
Windows Hello and Passport will be available on all Windows 10 devices sometime later this year, probably in time for the holiday season.
