Windows 10 Latest News: Microsoft Says No Windows 11 in the Future, They will Focus on Cloud Products
Redmond, Washington-based tech titan Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Windows 10 will be its last great operating system and the company will not launch a Windows 11 in near future. Instead, Microsoft will be improving the Windows 10 constantly through updates.
Earlier this week, the tech titan told BBC, "Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner." According to IB Times, the statement comes in the wake of a Microsoft employee telling a gathering at the Microsoft Ignite conference in Chicago that Windows 10, which will be released this summer, will be the "last version" of the current operating system.
However, that there won't be any Windows 11 in the near future does not denote that the tech giant will be ending Windows or abandon the software. On the other hand, Microsoft will continue to update the OS from time to time and also incorporate latest improvements and features continually. This is something akin to the manner in which Google operates its Chrome OS software that powers company's Chromebook computers. Instead of launching a major new version for Chrome OS every year or at regular intervals, Google just keeps improving it at all times.
In fact, this will be a major shift for Microsoft, which has been traditionally coming out with a major launch, and subsequently work on a new version to be released a few years later. Such a system was workable in the 1990s and early 2000s, but currently, technology moves much faster and Microsoft's way of functioning has turned out to be an outdated way of developing an OS. In fact, Windows 10 is meant to work across various platforms, including PCs, tablets and smartphones. This means that Windows 10 needs to be adaptable and constantly updated as new devices are launched.
At the same time, Microsoft is also keen lessen its dependence on Windows for its revenue. In fact, CEO Satya Nadella is shifting the focus of the company to subscription services like Office 365 and Dynamics CRM. Cloud products like these will enable the company to generate revenue from the cloud on a continuing basis.
