William Shatner News: 'Star Trek' Actor Defends Missing Late Leonard Nimoy's Funeral
After being under the microscope following the death of 'Star Trek' star Leonard Nimoy, actor, co-star and dear friend, William Shatner finally speaks up and slams all those speaking against him for missing Nimoy's funeral.
It was very well explained by Nimoy's co-star that he had prior engagements that he promised to attend to months before Nimoy was even close to dying. Nimoy who died at age 83 was in Los Angeles while Shatner was in Florida to attend to the 58th International Red Cross Ball in Palm Beach as he would also be honored at the event.
The actor posted a series of tweets after being criticized for missing his friend's funeral to attend to a ball. "I chose to honor a commitment I made months ago to appear at a charitable fundraiser. A lot of money was raised. So here I am; tell me off," Shatner wrote on his Twitter on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Shatner did not forget for one second about the death of his dear friend as he mentioned and remembered Nimoy even during the ball in Florida. "He had a good, long life, he did a lot of things, he inspired a lot of people, he was loved by a lot of people and he loved a lot of people," Shatner told Local10.com on-camera at the ball. "It's sad that you have to be reminded that life is that short," he added.
Missing the funeral was apparently a big deal for many as Shatner was even in the headlines of the New York Daily News with the headline: 'Captain Jerk: Claims night event in Florida means he can't beam up to L.A. in time.'
Upon knowing the headline, Shatner himself shared a photo of the front cover of the paper on Twitter wanting to discuss it with the people. He answered in one of his tweets as he was being titled a jerk for not being at his friend's funeral, "Walking out on a major fundraiser wouldn't have you calling me a jerk for leaving a charity high & dry? Hmm?"
Shatner also posted on Twitter explaining that flights are not always available for everyone's convenience. "One of the other misconceptions seems to be that folks think flights to LAX occur all night long," he wrote on Twitter.
