Wii U News: Company President Owns Up To Disappointing Sales Of Console?
Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has accepted responsibility as he shared to shareholders the news that everybody already knows: the Wii U was a disappointment.
He revealed that they projected Wii U to sell about 100 million units based on the sales of the Wii alone.
"I was responsible for selling the Wii U, and I knew what was good about it," he said. "So I talked with those in charge of sales about the importance of conveying the attractiveness of Wii U to consumers. I am guessing that some of this communication may have come across in a negative tone."
According to the news article from Fortune, the Wii U only sold for under 13 million units all over the world. Contrast that to the 102 million of Wii units sold. Just for comparison's sake, the GameCube sold for almost 22 million while the Nintendo 64 sold for about 33 million.
There's no exact cause cited why the Wii U did not sell as well as the Wii U. But the reasons range from its controller, or that Nintendo did not innovate as well as the other consoles like the Xbox or Playstation. Also it could be because of the lack of third-party titles that are coming to Wii U. Finally, the unit might have suffered because of the price.
In fact, the news about the Wii U was so bad that Nintendo is hyping the NX as the next console for the company. Although the company made no confirmation, the new console will reportedly replace the Wii U.
