Whitney Houston Biopic Movie Release Date, Trailer: Lifetime to Air Film Jan. 17 2015 [VIDEO]

Lifetime is set to release a biopic featuring the life and career of the iconic singer Whitney Houston and has now released a trailer in anticipation of its January release, People reported.

The one-minute trailer for 'Whitney' was released by Lifetime and it features Yaya DaCosta in the role of Whitney Houston. Unfortunately, Houston passed away in February 2012.

DaCosta is known for her appearance on 'America's Next Top Model' cycle 3 in 2004. She has since appeared on numerous films such as 'Take the Lead' in 2006 and 'The Butler' in 2013.

In the trailer, fans and interested viewers can hear one of Houston's hit songs "I Will Always Love You." Beyond that the biopic steps into the life of Houston which comes across serious topics like Houston's marriage to Bobby Brown and her drug use.

'Whitney' is the directorial debut of the Oscar-nominated Angela Bassett, who worked with Houston back in 1995 for the movie 'Waiting to Exhale', according to People.

For 'Whitney', Bassett told Entertainment Weekly that she wanted to show the viewers "a story about a boy and a girl who fell in love."

While the trailer showed Brown and Houston arguing and seemingly falling out of love, Bassett said her film focused on the entirety of Houston's relationship with Brown and also the best thing she was famous for, which is singing.

On a sour note, Houston's family does not support Lifetime's upcoming biopic.

Houston's mother, Cissy Houston said they were exhausted because of the misinformation and lies that constantly surround the media's presentation of Houston. She asked the media to let her daughter rest peacefully.

"Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family's objections," she added, and claimed that none of the people who knew the singer or Bobby had anything to do with the film.

'Whitney' is one among many biopic films being released that features the lives and careers of departed stars, according to People. Other biopics released include that of singer Aaliyah and actress Brittany Murphy, who passed away in 2001 and 2009, respectively.

'Whitney' will debut on Jan. 17 at 8 pm on Lifetime.
