'Wayward Pines' Season 3 Release Date, News: Third Season Features New Breed of Enemies
While there is no official announcement yet that the series will be renewed for another season, fans of "Wayward Pines" continue to hope that it will return for its third season. When the series returns, fans expect its story to be get more interesting than ever.
Since "Wayward Pines" season 2 went down by 36 percent in ratings, some speculate that FOX will no longer renew the series for another season. However, there have been reports that the series has already gotten the green light for a third season, which is going to be the series finale.
Since there is a possibility that "Wayward Pines" will return for its last season, fans are already making theories about the possible storylines of season 3.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Blake Crouch revealed that the upcoming season will focus on the evolution of humans into Abbies.
"Look, Wayward Pines is very focused on the idea of human evolution and humans evolved into Abbies, but that does not have to be a static thing. It's continuing, even in the course of our show. Evolution has always pushed forward, and the scene suggests that the Abbies are changing also. The Abbies will evolve into something else. And he wanted to just drop the notion that perhaps when these residents of Wayward Pines emerge from the pods, they're going to find a very different world than the ones they left behind," he said.
In his separate interview with Zap2it, Crouch revealed that the gripping finale of season 2 was an intentional lead to the upcoming season. This suggests that the evolution has no reversal, and that the Abbies cannot return to human form. Instead, the humans led by Dr. Theo and CJ Mitchum will wake up to find a new breed of enemies which resemble humans but are worse than Abbies.
"Wayward Pines" season 3 is expected to premiere sometime in 2017.
