Washington Redskins News: RG3 Suffers Concussion in Preseason Game

Recently, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III stirred a bit of controversy when he said he "felt he was the best quarterback in the league." Thursday night, in a game against the Detroit Lions, he left the game in the second quarter with a concussion.

As reported by Yahoo Sports, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said following the game that Griffin was going through the league mandated concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head and neck area. The team initially called the injury a stinger before re-classifying it as a concussion.

As noted by the Yahoo Sports report, it was a rough game for Griffin even before he got injured. The Redskins offensive line was in poor form, allowing RG3 to be sacked on three of his first five dropbacks. Griffin completed two of five passes for eight yards and took three sacks in four series of work before coming out with a concussion.

The play that led to the concussion occurred on a third-and-16 play, when Griffin tried to recover his own fumble. Lions' defensive lineman Corey Wootton fell on top of Griffin and appeared to tweak the area between the quarterback's neck and right shoulder, while his head was hit to the side.

Griffin stayed on the ground for a moment while being attended to by the Redskins medical staff. He eventually walked it off and was declared unable to return even before the half ended.

The report points out that after the game, Gruden said his quarterback's shoulder was fine, and while saying that Griffin still owned the starting spot, said that there is no current timetable for his return.

The Redskins' third preseason game will be against the Baltimore Ravens. Eric Edholm opines that even if Griffin is cleared to play before that game, Washington might be better served to leave him out than to face such a vaunted defense.
