Many fans will say Elena and Damon are the cutest couple under the sun - metaphorically speaking. We have been waiting for these two to get together all season, and just when we thought Delena came true, Kai gets in the way! Could Kai split these two up for good?

Fortunately, the Vampire Diaries has already confirmed that Elena and Damon will get together by the end of the season, even though they never said for how long. It seems undeniable that Kai will impact the couple's relationship, maybe even ending it.

The producer of the hit supernatural TV show, Julie Plec, mentioned to TVLine that Delena will run into "a lot of emotional obstacles." The obstacles are mostly in the details, such as distraction and doubt. She added that even without Kai, the couple could just "drift apart" because they are busy "dealing with "bad guys... loss and grief, character exits."

The executive producer, Caroline Dries, hinted that Kai is the "bad guy" that Plec was speaking about. "[Kai] has a chip on his shoulder for Elena and Damon, but especially Damon having been stranded by him in the prison world," Dries mentioned. So, to get back at Damon, Kai decided to go after the hero's biggest weakness: Elena.

It isn't all bad news for Vampire Diaries fans. Julie Plec would "really like to see them make it and be happy for a little while," and as the showrunner, we have a good feeling that the season will bring the happy ending we have all been waiting for.

The mid-season premiere airs on January 22^nd on CW.
