FIFA had announced earlier this year that it would be adding women soccer players on the cover of its hugely popular 'FIFA' video game series. Now that the USA women's soccer team has won the World Cup, it has put soccer star Alex Morgan on the cover of the U.S. edition of the upcoming 'FIFA 16' video game alongside male soccer star Lionel Messi.

A report in IB Times states that on Monday, Morgan took to her Twitter handle to post a photo of the new cover, together with the text "I'm so honored to be featured on the cover of #FIFA16. Thank you @EASPORTSFIFA!"

Soon after, ESPN FC also tweeted out the image, along with the caption "BREAKING: #USWNT's Alex Morgan will join Lionel Messi on the #FIFA16USCover!" This was retweeted by EA FIFA 16.

Later Morgan issued a statement saying, "It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of FIFA." She added, "I know people all over the world play this game and I'm really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women's soccer. And now to share the cover with today's greatest player is surreal."

For the uninitiated, apart from being a member of both the Portland Thorns FC and the National Women's Soccer League, Morgan is also an Olympic gold medalist.

Meanwhile, on Monday, video game developer and publisher Electronic Art (EA) also announced that Canadian Women's National Team captain Christine Sinclair will feature on the cover for the Canadian edition of 'FIFA 16.'

'FIFA 16' is slated for release on Sept. 22 for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Android and iOS.
