U.S. Cyber Attack News: United States Central Command's Twitter Account Hacked
Using the name @CENTCOM, ISIS managed to hack the United States Central Command's Twitter account and posted a message that displayed pro-ISIS intentions on January 12th.
Reading "I love you ISIS," the Twitter post was accompanied by a replaced avatar for the U.S. Central Command which showed a masked extremist. Threatening messages were directed to the U.S. military forces. Stating that ISIS was "already here," and that American soldiers had to watch out; the messages were disconcerting.
There were also hacked images portraying American Central Command staffers standing at an outpost with a goat, which leads people to believe that supporters of ISIS had obtained access to military posts.
Central Command's YouTube account also fell victim to ISIS' hacking prowess. At about the same time as the Twitter hack, the YouTube channel belonging to Central Command showed two videos in support of the terroristic militant group.
The time of the hacks were in line with President Obama's Washington speech on securing the identities of those shopping online, making ISIS's social media attack quite ironic-and embarrassing.
Central Command is saying that these stunts were pure acts of vandalism, and assured the public that the hackers did not obtain any classified information. No networks of operation had been affected either.
Still, as of now, no one knows how exactly the militants were able to hack the social media accounts of Central Command. It is known that whoever carried out the cyber attacks used the moniker "CyberCaliphate," although whether or not they are directly linked with ISIS remains unclear.
