Under Armour News: Athletic Apparel Company Taps Legendary Boxer Muhammad Ali for Deal

Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady, Jamie Foxx, Stephen Curry, and now Muhammad Ali"”the list of Under Armour's big-named endorsers continues to grow, with the athletic apparel manufacturer's latest signing of the greatest boxer of all time, as first reported by CNN Money.

Under Armour is set to launch a lifestyle apparel line centered on Ali's likeness and motivational phrases. The former world heavyweight champion will also be featured in the sportswear giant's future marketing campaigns.

"Ali is one of the most recognized and celebrated figures of all time," Under Armour said in an issued statement.

The 73-year-old will be part of a campaign promoting the line that is planned to launch in March. The report says that along with the right to use Ali's name and likeness, Under Armour has also gotten permission to use video clips of the boxing legend for its future campaigns.

On that note, financial terms of the deal were kept undisclosed.

The Balitmore-based company continues its aggressive signing of endorsers, recently launching NBA breakout star Curry's first signature shoe, after nearly signing Baltimore native NBA megastar Kevin Durant away from Nike last summer.

Yahoo Finance's Jeff Macke opines that while youngsters might find the move surprising, Under Armour's decision makes a lot of business sense. Macke notes that many people over the age of 40 instantly recognize Ali.

"Guys my age still love him. For guys over 40, Ali sells a lot of stuff."

After an ultra-aggressive year of marketing, Under Armour has seen its stock price rocket to over 50 percent in the course of one year.

Born Cassius Clay, Ali began training at 12-years-old and won the world heavyweight title at age 22 after beating Sonny Liston in 1964. To this day, he remains the only three-time lineal world heavyweight champion, winning in 1964, 1974, and 1978.
