UFC News: Statement Released Supporting Aldo Following Testing Incident
The lead up to the highly anticipated title fight between UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor has been absent of any sort of controversy outside of persistent verbal jabs between the two. That changed Thursday last week when Drug Free Sport director Ben Mosier came to Nova Uniao to perform a random drug test on the champion.
The urine sample was discarded after the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) and the Brazilian federal police learned that Mosier did not have the proper visa to work in Brazil.
As reported by MMAFighting.com, the UFC has released a statement supporting Aldo and his coach Andre Pederneiras.
"The UFC has learned about the out-of-competition test, originally scheduled for Thursday, June 11, with Jose Aldo, by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Aldo has always been an exemplary athlete and a great champion for the UFC, and has proven it all this time. We affirm the authority that Aldo was made available to the test when requested by the Nevada Commission. Andre Pederneiras, the champion's manager and coach, then received the tester in his gym in Rio de Janeiro in Friday, when the test was officially done. The UFC declares unconditional support to the featherweight champion Jose Aldo and reiterates its admiration for the Nevada Commission for wanting to ensure a clean competition between athletes."
MMAFighting earlier reported the specifics of the incident. According to Aldo's coach, CABMMA COO Cirstiano Sampaio contacted the Brazilian federal police and met Pederneiras, Also, and Mosier at Nova Uniao, where it was learned that while Mosier is licensed by the NAC, his visa doesn't allow him to work in Brazil. Mosier was issued a $130 fine, and given eight days to leave the country.
The urine sample taken by Mosier has since been discarded. Aldo faces McGregor at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 11 at UFC 189.
