UFC News: Cormier to Face Gustafsson at UFC 192; Cowboys Stadium Eyed for UFC 194
With former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones still out of commission, the UFC announced Saturday that current champion Daniel Cormier will be defending his title for the first time at UFC 192 against Alexander Gustafsson. The main event is scheduled for Oct. 3 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Cormier won the title after Jones was suspended indefinitely and stripped of his title following an alleged hit and run incident. He thoroughly dominated light heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson for three rounds before finishing him via rear-naked choke.
Gustafsson is awarded the title shot despite losing his last fight via knockout at the hands of Johnson. He, however, holds the distinction of unleashing the most punishment on the seemingly invincible Jones during their championship fight at UFC 165.
Other fights on the UFC 192 card will be announced in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, the UFC is reportedly looking to go bigger, eyeing the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the featherweight unification title fight between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor.
According to a Yahoo Sports report, an Andrea Bocelli concert at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas on Dec. 5 has led to the UFC's decision to look into the possibility of holding their first event at the Cowboys' stadium.
The report notes that the UFC thought of moving the UFC 194 fight card across Las Vegas Boulevard to Mandalay Bay, but its much smaller capacity led to Dallas becoming an option.
UFC 189 packed a record-breaking 16,019 fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the card headlined by the interim title fight between Chad Mended and McGregor. UFC president Dana White, when asked about the possibility of having an event in Dallas, said they were open to it if the right fight comes along.
Right now, there is no bigger fight in the world than an Aldo-McGregor spectacle.
