UFC Fight Night 69 Gustafsson vs. Teixeira Fight News: Dana White Officially Confirms Bout
Sweden's Alexander Gustafsson will be facing Glover Teixeira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 69 on June 20 in Berlin, UFC president Dana White confirmed.
The news of the five-round fight between to former light heavyweight title contenders was first reported by Swedish MMA website Kimura. Soon after the report surfaced, White told MMACrazy during Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor's World Tour stop in London that the fight is indeed scheduled at the O2 Arena in the German capital.
"It's true. I am confirming that it is true," said White.
Both Gustafsson and Teixeira find themselves in a career pickle with losses derailing their title hopes. The Swede was slated to face UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 178 after disposing of Jimi Manuwa last March, but an injury had him replaced by Daniel Cormier.
Jones then suffered an injury, which meant Gustafsson needed to take another fight to keep active. He was matched up with Anthony Johnson in his hometown of Stockholm, with the match held inside a football stadium. He wound up suffering the first TKO loss of his career, stunning the partisan crowd and bringing Gustafsson to tears.
Teixeira for his part met Jones for the title, but was thoroughly dominated in five rounds en route to a unanimous decision loss, which snapped his win streak at 20. He looked to rebound against Phil Davis at UFC 179, but lost another unanimous decision to give him the first losing streak of his career. Now 35, Teixeira might need a win just to keep his job.
Despite their losses, both fighters remain in the top 10 of USA Today Sports and MMA Junkie's MMA Light Heavyweight Rankings.
UFC Fight Night 69 will be the organization's second trip to Berlin. Other fights on the card have yet to be announced, but the entire event is expected to be streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
