UFC Fight News: White Confirms Weidman vs Rockhold and Cormier vs Gustafsson Title Fights
UFC President Dana White has just announced Wednesday a couple of title fights in store for MMA fans. As reported by Bleacher Report, Luke Rockhold will finally get the title shot he's been begging for against Middleweight champion Chris Weidman, while newly minted Light Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will be making his first title defense against Alexander Gustafsson.
White did not specify a bout for the two title fights, but both bouts are expected to be headliners with good PPV potential.
Rockhold (14-2) has been outspoken about getting a title shot, and was not shy about expressing his disappointment when it was rumored that Ronaldo Jacare Souza was going to get the title shot instead of him.
Weidman, who was recently bumped to No. 2 on the pound-for-pound list doesn't seem to be impressed with either fighter.
"I would expect a tough fighter, but I'm running right through any of these guys. (Rockhold's) well-rounded, but he's not great anywhere. He's not the best striker I've ever fought, he's not the best jiu-jitsu guy I've ever fought. Jacare brings a different element, he's really good on the ground and he's probably more dangerous on the feet than Rockhold. Rockhold is well-rounded and keeps a good solid pace going throughout the whole fight. They are two completely different fighters. If I was to say who was more dangerous, it would probably be Jacare, but there are probably more holes in his game than Rockhold," Weidman was quoted saying.
The Light Heavyweight match was met by a bit of controversy. As pointe dout by Bleacher Report, Damon Martin of FOX Sports suggests Ryan Bader was a more deserving contender.
"Sorry but a guy who just got KO'd in the first round of his last fight should not get a title shot over a guy on a 4 fight win streak," Martin tweeted.
While Gustafsson may have been knocked-out by the guy Cormier just dominated, he is still the only guy that dragged former Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones (who thoroughly dominated Cormier in five rounds) to a five-round war.
