UFC 2015 News: UFC Sues Silva for Comments on Fixed Fights
The UFC has finally had enough of suspended fighter Wanderlei Silva, suing the Brazilian in a Nevada district court for defaming the promotion and disparaging its business following Silva's most recent rant about fight-fixing in the UFC.
As reported by MMAJunkie, the lawsuit claims Silva committed "intentional misconduct" and asks for undisclosed punitive damages for defamation as well as attorney's fees. UFC's aren't company Zuffa LLC is also asking for damages in excess of $10,000 for disparagement, according to the report.
"Over the past year, Silva has continued to criticize Zuffa, its owners and executive officers, and the (Nevada State Athletic Commission)," Zuffa attorney Colby Williams of Las Vegas-based Campbell & Williams wrote. "While Zuffa has monitored Silva's remarks, the company has largely dismissed Silva's attacks as the misguided rants of a disgruntled ex-fighter. Silva's latest outburst, however, indisputably crossed the line and necessitates swift legal redress."
"Simply put, one of the most damning and damaging allegations to the reputation of a fight promoter like Zuffa is to brand it a fight-fixer," the lawsuit adds.
As noted by MMAJunkie, Silva has 20 days to respond to the litigation. The MMA-centric website was unable to reach Silva's Las Vegas-based attorney, Ross Goodman, for comment.
Silva was previously banned for life by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after he literally ran out of the gym when the commission tried to conduct a pre-fight drug test on the Brazilian.
Back in May, a Nevada district judge overturned the ban, arguing that while the NSAC had the right to conduct the drug testing, the commission didn't have enough evidence to support a lifetime term.
"I've made it very clear to you all that I will never again fight for this promotion, the U.F. Circus. Fixed fights - and I can prove it! I haven't yet deopped the bomb. I haven't said everything I know!" Silva wrote on Facebook this past week.
