UFC 2015 News: ‘Stitch’ Duran Talks About Getting Fired

After news broke that legendary cutman Jacob "Stitch" Duran was let go by the UFC for speaking up on the organization's sponsorship deal with Reebok and how it affects cutmen, the Internet saw an outpour of support for Duran, and led to even more criticism of the UFC.

John Nash of Bloody Elbow, who also wrote the article with Duran's initial comments, spoke to the iconic cutman again to get his views on the recent developments.

"What I think happened was your article created a firestorm with the fans. The fans responded and they tweeted to Dana, Lorenzo, and Reebok about what a shi**y thing they were doing not including the cutmen in their compensation deals when it came to Reebok," Duran told Nash.

"All that negative stuff the UFC didn't want to hear even though it was the truth. And I got a call and basically was told that they- and they didn't throw names out - but they don't want you to work anymore UFC shows based on the article regarding the Reebok deal," he said while also confirming that he was released because of his comments in the article.

Duran adds, "The thing is there's been so much negative talk about it. The last few fights that I did, all the fighters - a majority, 98% of them - weren't happy with the outfits and I think maybe the UFC thought they didn't need any more negative publicity. That they had enough. From a marketing standpoint, and I've worked for a marketing company, you look at the responses and you act accordingly. If you're smart instead of arrogant you look at that and try to tweak it."

Nash notes that Duran is already booked for two major boxing matches"”working the corner of Andre Berto for his Sept. 12 bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Vladimir Klitchsko's on Oct. 24 when he faces Tyson Fury.

During the interview, Duran says that he does not regret making the comments he made. He also said that he would've been happier to keep working with the UFC, but could not work under these terms.

Reebok's deal with the UFC prohibits any other sponsored gear to be worn at UFC events. The fighters get a piece of the sponsorship deal, while the cutmen do not.
