UFC 2015 News: Paige VanZant to Draw First Main Event; Fans File WhiteHouse.Gov Petition for Nick Diaz

Budding women's MMA star Paige VanZant recently announced her new deal with the UFC, shortly after it was announced that the 21-year-old would be taking the spotlight in her first main event bout, MMA Weekly reports.

UFC officials announced that VanZant would be headlining UFC Fight Night 80 on Dec. 10 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is set to face No. 8 ranked strawweight Joanne Calderwood.

As noted by the MMA Weekly report, UFC Fight Night 80, which will be held at The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan, will stream live on UFC Fight Pass, and is the first of an unprecedented back-to-back-to-back trilogy of events to be held in December. The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale will follow suit on Dec. 11, while the massive UFC 194 headlined by featherweight champion Jose Aldo and interim champion Conor McGregor is set for Dec. 12.

Joining VanZant in UFC Fight Night 80 is the com-main event between The Ultimate Fighter 15 winner Michael Chiesa and Jim Miller. Ither bouts on the card include Sheldon Westcott vs. Edgar Garcia, Danny "Hot Chocolate" Roberts vs. Michael Graves, Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Andres Stahl, John Howard vs. Tim Means, Lyman Good vs. Omari Akhmedov, Antonio Carlos Junior vs. Kevin Casey, Thiago Santos vs. Elias Theodorou, Zubaira Tukhugov vs. Phillipe Nover and Kailin Curran vs. Emily Peters Kagan.

VanZant is widely viewed as women's MMA's next big star. She is currently 6-1 and has won all three of her fights in MMA's premier promotion. VanZant has won her last four fights, three of them via stoppages.

Meanwhile, as the fallback from the Nevada State Athletic Commission's five-year suspension of Nick Diaz for failing a drug test for marijuana, fans have filed a petition to WhiteHouse.gov to have the suspension lifted.

"Nick Diaz was unfairly banned from being a professional fighter by the Nevada Athletic Commission," the petition reads. "They ruled based on their personal feelings and beliefs towards the use of medical marijuana and used their power to deprive Mr. Diaz of being able to make a living."

As of Wednesday 9:00 p.m. PT, the petition had over 30,000 of the 100,000 required signatures. Should the requirement be met, the petition will be formally addressed by President Barack Obama.
