UFC 2015 News: McGregor and Faber to Coach Next Ultimate Fighter

On the day of the UFC 189 weigh-ins, a video of Team Alpha Male leader Urijah Faber and eventual UFC interim featherweight champion Conor McGregor getting into a brief and minor scuffle circulated on social media. At UFC 189, McGregor knocked out Faber's teammate and close friend, Chad Mendes, to win the title. And on Sunday, UFC president Dan White announced that the McGregor and Faber would be reunited as coaches of "The Ultimate Fighter" season 22's coaches.

"The Ultimate Fighter: Team McGregor vs. Team Faber will feature 16 competitors in the lightweight division and, in addition to a UFC contract; national pride will be on the line as McGregor leads eight European hopefuls against the faber-led American squad," the official UFC release reads.

"The sixth season to air on FOX Sports 1 will kick-off on Wednesday, September 9 with a two-hour season premiere airing at 10 p.m. ET. The season will continue with 11 one-hour shows Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET. The series is the highest rated and most watched original program since the network's inception in August 2013."

As noted by BloodyElbow.com, TUF 22's format falls along the lines of TUF 9, which was USA vs. UK, coached by Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping back in 2009. There have also been other international flavored TUFs with Canada vs. Australia, UK vs. Australia, among some of the formats done in the past.

The UFC is riding the irrepressible wave of its biggest star in McGregor, who just headlined UFC 189, which broke the U.S. gate record with $7.2 million. White has also said that he expects the PPV numbers for the event to likewise break previous records. UFC 189 is considered by a large number of fans and pundits to be the greatest UFC event ever.

BloodyElbow.com points out that unlike previous seasons, McGregor and faber will not be fighting at the end of the season.
