UFC 2015 News: Lacking Evidence, Jon Jones Case Put on Hold
It appears that the legal future of former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in connection with his felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injury will be put on hold as reports have surfaced that the prosecutor in charge of the case lacks key pieces of evidence, as reported by MMA Junkie.
The two key piece of evidence needed to move forward with the case, as noted by MMA Junkie, are: medical records for the accident's alleged victim and dispatch reports from the Albuquerque Police Department, according to the public information officer for the Bernalillo County (N.M.) District Attorney.
Even as the 60-day deadline to move forward on the former pound for pound king's case recently expired, the prosecutor can still pursue charges against Jones. Had the prosecutor's office made the deadline, MMA Junkie points out that the case would have gone before a grand jury, which would in turn decide whether to indict the 27-year-old and proceed with a criminal trial.
"Proceeding a case without complete discovery could result in the likely dismissal of the case altogether," district attorney PIO Kayla Anderson wrote in an email to MMA Junkie. "We have requested both pieces of outstanding evidence and anticipate moving forward when we have a completed case investigation.
During Jones' first court appearance, the fighter entered a no plea. The judge lifted any travel restriction, which allowed him to compete in his scheduled fight against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187, but the UFC subsequently suspended him indefinitely and stripped him of the Light heavyweight title.
According to his coaches, Jones has remained active with his team, helping teammates prepare for their fights, most notably UFC heavyweight contender Andrei Arlovski, who recently figured in a Fight of the Year candidate against Travis Browne.
