UFC 2015 News: Edgar vs. Mendes to Headline TUF 22 Finale

Brazilian website reports that The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale will be headlined by a vital featherweight matchup featuring former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and three-time title challenger Chad Mendes. MMAJunkie later confirmed the reports, citing multiple people with knowledge of the booking who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.

The two fighters have been closely linked with the UFC featherweight title. Mendes most recently took as shot at the interim title, losing to Conor McGregor, while Edgar has declared himself to be in line for the title soon after the Irishman wrapped the interim belt around his waist.

As noted by MMAJunkie, Edgar is currently ranked No. 3 in the lates NOS Energy Drink MMA featherweight rankings, while Mendes is at No. 5. Edgar is also included in the top 15 pound-for-pound list.

The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale is scheduled to take place on Dec. 11, a day before the massive title unification fight between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and McGregor. The bout is slated to be held in Las Vegas, with a venue yet to be announced.

Presently, The Ultimate Fighter 22 card also includes Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson, Evan Dunham vs. Joe Lauzon and Ryan LaFlare vs. Mike Pierce.

MMAJunkie points out that Edgar has openly expressed his willingness to fight anybody in the 145-pound division. He brings a four-fight win streak coming into his matchup with Mendes, defeating the likes of Urijah faber, Cub Swanson, B.J. Penn and Charles Oliviera along the way.

Mendes, for his part, has lost twice to Aldo, and most recently lost to McGregor at UFC 189 after taking on the fight on two weeks notice.

He has repeatedly said that things would have been much different had he undergone a full training camp.
