UFC 2015 News: Aldo Still Scheduled to Fight at UFC 189, Has Mendes as Contingency Plan

The MMA world was buzzing after news came out of Brazil that UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo suffered a fractured rib during sparring. But now, the UFC has released a statement saying that Aldo is still good to go for his highly anticipated title fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 189.

"In light of recent reports regarding the status of UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, UFC has received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not suffer a broken rib. Following a review of the scans, it has been determined that the champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib cage and cartilage injury during training," the official release said.

"With this news, Aldo has expressed that he has every intention of facing Conor McGregor at UFC 189."

The release adds that should the situation change between now and July 11, the UFC has come up with a contingency plan that will pit No. 1 featherweight contender Chad Mendes and McGregor for the interim UFC featherweight championship.

The release adds, "UFC remains committed to delivering the featherweight and the welterweight championship fights at UFC 189 during International Fight Week in Las Vegas."

After news broke of Aldo's injury, a number of UFC fighters expressed thru Twitter their availability to fight McGregor should the champion be out. Some of the most notable names were former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, and Nate Diaz.

As noted by MMA Junkie, Mendes is just one fight removed from his second title shot against Aldo at UFC 179. Before losing a unanimous decision to the champion, he was on a five-fight win streak that included four straight knockouts. He rebounded from the Aldo loss to get a first round TKO against Ricardo Lamas back in April.

UFC 189 is scheduled fro July 11 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
