UFC 191 Preview, News: The Biggest MMA Contenders of 2015
Demetrious Johnson is one of the best fighters on the planet. He's No. 3 in the UFC's pound-for-pound rankings, he's never lost as a UFC flyweight and is the only champion in the division the UFC has seen. Apart from losing a bantamweight fight against then UFC champion Dominick Cruz, there has only been one person that came close to besting Johnson. That man is John Dodson. And they are set to face each other in a rematch this Saturday at UFC 191.
Dodson almost beat Johnson back in 2013 by catching the champion multiple times with his tremendous punching power. And that, perhaps, might be his only chance against a fighter that is superior in every other aspect of the game.
Johnson has the best footwork outside of an in-his-prime Dominick Cruz, and is a master at combining strikes with well-timed takedowns. Johnson is also a superior grappler and would be wise to eventually take the dangerous Dodson to the ground whenever he gets the chance.
As exciting as this matchup seems, it could all boil down to a better fighter versus one that will always have a puncher's chance as long as he's standing.
Frank Mir expressed the sentiment that he and Andrei Arlovski should have been made to fight other fighters instead of each other, being both in the middle of career resurgences.
But instead of building more momentum toward potential title contention, they will have to do so against each other at UFC 191.
Like the Johnson-Dodson matchup, this fight features one that is better on the ground, and one that will knock you out off your feet. Should Mir take the fight to where he is best, he certainly has the advantage, but the revival of the brutal "Pitbull" may be too much for him to overcome on the feet.
The Anthony Johnson and Jimi Manuwa figures to be a slugfest. Johnson is coming off a disappointing performance against Daniel Cormier in their title fight, where his cardio and wrestling was vastly exposed. He'll look to bounce back into title contention with an explosive performance he has been recently known for.
UFC 191 is set for Sept. 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
