UFC 189 News Update: Aldo Releases Statement on Injury

There were a lot of opinions thrown around when UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo was forced to withdraw from his much hyped title defense at UFC 189 against Conor McGregor. His scheduled opponent went as far as saying that you can't force a man who's scared for his life to get inside the Octagon with him, while others yet have questioned what has become a recurring theme of him withdrawing from fights due to injury. And recently, Aldo finally sounded off about his decision to pull out of the fight.

"For three months, I trained three times a day. I invested my time and money, bringing training partners from Brazil and other countries, to do the best training camp of my life so I would be ready to defend my belt for the eighth time on July 11," Aldo said in a released statement. "Unfortunately, I fractured my rib during a training session, which I can prove from an official medical report, and besides trying my best to fight, I was forced the other way and that made me really said. Only I, my family, coaches and teammates know how hard I worked to represent Brazil again."

Aldo even released photos of X-Rays of his injured rib, which showed a fracture. Last week, the UFC released a statement saying the champion suffered a "bruise."

"Many people told me to fight anyway because of the money I could make, but I wouldn't sell myself for any money, no matter how much," the only featherweight champion in UFC history said.

On those that question how he's fought just seven times in the past four years, he had this to say: "If those fights had occurred, I would have done 12 title fights in four years in the UFC, an average of three fights a year, something that no other UFC champion did. A UFC champion rarely does three title defenses in one year," citing that last fact as the reason why he doesn't believe the UFC should have put an interim belt at stake for the replacement fight between McGregor and No. 1 featherweight contender Chad Mendes.
