UFC 188 Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum News: Title Bout in Mexico City on June 13
The UFC recently announced the main event for UFC 188 in Mexico City. UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who has been inactive since defending his title against Junior Dos Santos back in October 2013, is scheduled to defend his title against interim title-holder Fabricio Werdum on June 13.
A string of injuries has kept Velasquez out of the octagon for what will be 20 months when he finally faces Werdum, who he was supposed to fight last October before injuring his right knee. Before that setback, he underwent shoulder surgery.
With its Heavyweight champion out for an extended period, the UFC pitted Werdum against Mark Hunt for the interim title at UFC 180 in Mexico City, where Werdum caught the Super Samoan with a knee to the chin.
As Yahoo Sports reports, the UFC had held off going back to Mexico City because it wanted the Mexican-American Velasquez in the main event. But after coaching opposite Werdum in the Ultimate Fighter Latin America, Mexican fans got hyped up for seeing the two meet in the octagon.
The UFC also announced that former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez and former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez will be matched up for a Lightweight bout in UFC 188.
While both are coming off losses"”Melendez to UFC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, who he started strong off against before being caught in a submission hold, and Alvarez to the streaking Donald Cerrone via unanimous decision"”the winner would be propelled right back in the thick of title contention.
Before the fight was announced, both fighters turned to their respective social media accounts to make the fight happen after Alvarez had to withdraw from a fight with Benson Henderson scheduled last January.
Other fights announced for UFC 188 include Tecia Torres versus Angela Hill in a women's Strawweight bout, and the Welterweight matchup between Augusto "Dodger" Montano and Cathal Pendred.
