UFC 187 Anthony Johnson vs Daniel Cormier Preview: Upcoming May, 23 PPV Event in the Spotlight
UFC 187 was one of the most anticipated fight cards of the year, but another Jon Jones controversy, and a Khabib Nurmagomedov later, things aren't quite the same. Still, the UFC pay-per-view on Saturday, May 23 remains a stacked card filled with intriguing matchups. Here's a quick look at what you can expect.
Daniel Cormier takes the former Light Heavywight champion's place against a red hot Anthony "Rumble" Johnson. Cormier was brought to tears after being dominated through five rounds by Jones in their January title fight. But he gets a shot at redemption just months later against the very dangerous Johnson.
Johnson should have the striking advantage, that much is obvious. He has knocked out six of his last opponents and is riding a nine-fight winning streak. He has all the momentum one could ask going into a title fight, but he has gone on record saying that this may be a tougher fight than Jones.
"When people get second chances, they tend to go a little bit harder. He's going to come at me like a bulldog and I expect that. The fact that I expect it means it won't surprise me with anything he brings. I know what I'm getting myself into and so does he," Johnson said.
If Cormier is able to close to distance and use his wrestling and clinch game to his advantage, Johnson could be right in saying this will be a tough fight for him.
The second title fight of the night will see Middleweight champion Chris Weidman defend his title against Vitor Belfort. Much of the talk going into the fight has centered on the absence of testosterone replacement therapy in Belfort's regimen and how it will affect him as a fighter. He has looked noticeably smaller than his usual action-figure physique. How that translates on Saturday night will be interesting.
On the other side, is a champion that appears to only be reaching his prime. Apart from battling with a string of injuries, Weidman has looked dominant whenever he has stepped into the cage.
Belfort will have to bring all he can, including a hot tub time machine, if he's going to have a chance against the champion.
Donald Cerrone got a big break when Nurmagomedov injured his knee. The injury to his supposed opponent sets him up with a replacement fighter, and a very winnable bout that's his to lose. John Makdessi is a worthy opponent, but it doesn't look like he can hang with Cerrone, who has won seven straight fights. Another win would set Cowboy up with Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.
