UFC 185 Fight Recap, News: Two Titles Change Hands in Entertaining MMA Matches
The stacked UFC 185 card featuring two title fights, a welterweight battle primed for a title shot, a heavyweight showdown, and the octagon debut of a former Olympic gold medalist delivered on several fronts Saturday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
The narrative coming into the fight was that Anthony "Showtime" Pettis was being brewed as MMA's next crossover star. And with his fan friendly highlight worthy fighting style, it should've been just a matter of time for one of the top pound-for-pound fighters.
Only it wasn't, at least not yet. Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos made sure of that delivering a five round beat down that surprised everyone, even those rooting for dos Anjos.
RDA thoroughly dominated a historically dominant fighter, outclassing him wherever the fight went. He pressured the former champion from the opening bell, and maintained the pressure through all five rounds to win a unanimous 50-45 decision.
Dos Anjos said that he knew he was going to win the fight beforehand because "God told him that." I was a bold claim, but was supported by an equally bold performance.
UFC president Dana White said he didn't think anyone could do that to Pettis, who needed stitches, and was diagnosed with a concussion for his troubles.
Earlier, another upset came when Polish Joanna Jedrzejczyk took the UFC Strawweight title from Carla Esparza with a second round stoppage.
Esparza, who became the inaugural women's strawweight champion by winning The Ultimate Fighter 20 was no match for Jedrzejczyk's striking game. And when she couldn't turn to her wrestling to change the tide, it didn't take long before the Polish's strikes made the title change hands.
Johny Hendricks carried on with his trot back to title contention defeating Matt Brown in a unanimous decision. The former welterweight champion, while clearly defeating a top-10 welterweight contender wasn't particularly impressed with his performance.
"That wasn't a good fight. I just can't figure it out, man. I'm going out there, I'm starting strong, but hell, I just can't finish," Hendricks told Joe Rogan post fight.
Earlier, Alistair Overeem delivered his best performance in the UFC, winning a unanimous decision against Roy Nelson.
