'True Detective' Season 3 Release Date: Next Season Will Not Happen Anymore?

While "True Detective" season 1 was widely considered a brilliant modern classic, season 2 was a flop. Because of this, reports suggest that "True Detective" season 3 may not happen anymore.

Following the stellar performances of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the first season of the series received generally favorable response from viewers. The follow-up season, however, did not do well despite being heavy on the big names. Season 2 starred Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell, but lacked the element that made viewers greet season 1 with applause.

Some speculate that HBO's main programming boss Casey Bloys is now making a choice between creating a new season for the detective show or calling it a day after season 2, although many believe that a new season is already highly unlikely.

Moreover, a report by Hollywood Reporter suggests that series creator Nic Pizzolatto is now planning to work on a new HBO series. This rules Pizzolatto out of making a "True Detective" season 3, further strengthening speculations that the series will no longer be renewed for another season.

"While juggernaut 'Game of Thrones' and the final season of Damon Lindelof's Peabody-winning drama 'The Leftovers' shouldn't require too much of Bloys' time, other decisions, including the fate of 'True Detective,' now fall to him," says The Hollywood Reporter.

No official announcement has been made yet about "True Detective" season, but some sources reveal that HBO has decided to give the series a close following season 2 to cut their losses.
