'True Detective' Season 3 News: Nic Pizzolatto Teaming Up With Robert Downey, Jr. For New HBO Drama

"True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto is reportedly teaming up with actor Robert Downey, Jr. for a new drama on HBO.

According to reports, Downey will not only executive produce but will also star the series. His wife, Susan Downey, will serve as his co-executive producer in the project, which marks his first role on television since his stint on Fox comedy "Ally McBeal," which aired from 2000 to 2002.

Variety recently reported that Pizzolatto will be the one to write the script of the new series. While HBO has not confirmed anything about the project, sources suggest that the upcoming drama could be connected with the "Perry Mason" reboot that Downey, Jr. has been planning to spearhead for quite a long time now. The project was originally slated for the big screen under the banner of Warner Bros.

As for "True Detective" season 3, HBO's programming president Casey Bloys reiterated at HBO's Television Critics Association panel in July that the widely acclaimed anthology is not dead despite the poor reception received by its second season. He also suggested that the series will continue on with someone else penning its script besides Nic Pizzolatto, who currently has an exclusive contract with the network until 2018.

During the event, the executive also revealed that Pizzolatto had not given much thought to the next installment of "True Detective" since he was busy with other projects. However, HBO did not confirm if one of those projects was his collaboration with the "Iron Man" actor.
