'True Detective' Season 2 Premiere Recap: A New Murder Thickens the Plot

True Detective is back, and the second season seems to be throwing fans for a loop. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are gone, and replacing them are Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch.

Season two premiered on June 21st, and introduced fans to this new set of dark and complicated characters, as well as a disturbing murder that connects all of them.

Things begin with a bang from the start of the episode, with a chilling new opening sequence and theme song. Ray Velcoro, played by Colin Farrell, drops his child off at school, and tells him to be strong, as he seems to have problems with bullies.

A flashback to Ray's first meeting with Frank Semyon, portrayed by Vince Vaughn, reveals that Ray was desperate to find the attacker of his wife.

Next, we see modern day Frank, who is married to Jordan, played by Kelly Reilly, and is dealing with an investigation that he is clearly unhappy about.

He is focused on his business and money almost exclusively, while Jordan wants to try for a child.

Meanwhile, Anni Bezzerides, played by Rachel McAdams, is seen as her boyfriend tries to get her to discuss their sex life. She is a sheriff's detective and is cold and isolated from everyone.

This season of True Detective will no doubt prove to be dark, mysterious and have an unnerving feeling of depravity about it.

The tone this season is worlds apart from that of last season, though not necessarily in a bad way.
