'True Detective' Season 2 Finale Recap, Spoilers: No Light At The End Of This Tunnel
In an about-turn from Season One's finale, Season Two's close turns out to be decidedly dark. Only the women survive by the end of HBOs seven-hour cat-and-mouse game, with Ani (Rachel McAdams) arriving in South America to rendezvous with Jordan (Kelly Reilly).
The finale starts off by outlining in great detail the events and culprits involved in the Caspere murder case that opened the season.
Ray realises that movie-set photographer Lenny (Luke Edwards) was the second child orphaned by the 1992 diamond heist involving Caspere, Burris, and Vinci PD Chief Hollaway (Afemo Omilami), and that he and his sister Laura (Courtney Halverson) murdered Caspere.
To complete the job, Len is now plotting to kill Holloway at the exchange set up to swap Caspere's self-erasing hard drive with the diamonds.
Ray takes Len's place at the exchange when he and Anifail to talk Len out of it, and the plan almost goes off without a hitch until Holloway lets slip to Ray that Laura is Caspere's daughter.
At this news, Len snaps and stabs Holloway which sets off a shooting spree in which they both die, Burris is lamed and Ani and Ray set off on the run.
With closure finally given to the Caspere saga, the finale then deals with the full extent of the dirty work that the murder brought to the surface.
Frank, aided by Ray, takes revenge on Osip (Timothy V. Murphy) and McCandless (Jon Lindstrom) who stole his rail deal money and interest, but he forgets about the Mexicans with whom he'd bargained earlier in the season.
When the Mexicans carjack Frank and bring him to the middle of desert, he bargains with the $1 million in his suitcase but refuses to give up his suit which is concealing the diamonds.
He pays for it with his life, walking his final mile in the desert with a stab wound in his stomach and visions of the lowest points of his life flashing before his eyes.
Meanwhile, Ray wants to see his son (revealed to be his real son in the end), which proves to be a fatal mistake. Burris (James Frain) puts a tracker under Ray's car. After a wild goose chase, Ray ends up in the forest where he is finally downed in a bullet blizzard, his last message to his son lost forever.
Ani, who had gone to Pitlor's (Rick Springfield) home to get evidence about the orgies, discovers that she is too late. Pitlor has been murdered and his files wiped. Fast-forward a year later, Ani tells the whole story to a reporter in Venezuela. Corruption is still rife, with orgy organizer Tony Chessani (Vinicius Machado) sworn in as Vinci's mayor, Burris as his deputy and Catalyst logos all around.
In the past year, Ani has given birth to Ray's baby, and now she, Jordan and Nails (Chris Kerson), Frank's right-hand man, are raising it.
It remains to be seen what will come of this baby's fate, and the fate of the show, come season 3.
