‘Tron 3’ Movie News: Disney Opts Against Moving Forward with Third Series Film

Fans, who have been hoping that the 'Tron' movies would be developed into a complete trilogy, will be disappointed to learn that despite two successful releases under its belt, Disney has decided against moving forward with a 'Tron 3' movie, at least for the moment.

Quoting The Hollywood Reporter, IB Times reports that the Mouse House backed off from the project at the very last moment, as filming was expected to commence on the 'Tron: Legacy' sequel shortly. There were even rumors suggesting that director Joseph Kosinski and stars Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund would be returning for the new movie. Had Disney gone ahead with the movie, it would officially turned 'Tron' from a two-part film into a franchise.

According to the report, 'Legacy' released in 2010 was a follow-up to the 1980s classic starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner. The film narrates the story of a man who discovers a complete universe in the digital world. In 'Legacy,' the audience came to learn that the character portrayed by Bridges had a son who goes into the "Grid" looking for his father.

The first movie of the two-parter acquired a massive cult following, and the sequel was a major success at the box office. Box Office Mojo reports that made on a budget of $170 million, 'Legacy' earned more than $400 million worldwide. At the same time, it helped introduce an entire new generation of fans to the world of 'Tron.'

After the resounding success, in 2014, Boxleitner told Crave Online that a third movie was in the works. Meanwhile, a source close to Disney told Variety that another installment seemed all but a foregone conclusion. However, the source also said that the project was never officially on the table.

According to the source, "We had never greenlit the movie, but it was in development for some time." The source further said, "Things in the queue got ahead of it and we have such a big slate out in front of it, we started to think, 'Where does it go?' And it's a pretty big investment to make if you are not even sure when you are going to release it."

While it is likely that Disney has not killed the project for a third 'Tron' movie completely, it seems that the studio is currently more involved with its upcoming titles like 'Jungle Book,' 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' and 'Beauty and the Beast.'
