Top 10 Grossing Films 2014: 'Transformers' Takes Number 1 Spot

With 2014 behind us, moviegoers are looking to find out which films made the top ten list this year in regards to earnings. The highest honor goes to 'Transformers Age of Extinction' which topped the worldwide earnings for 2014, as it brought Paramount Studios a whopping $1.08 billion.

Incidentally, it cost a whopping $210 million after rebates and starred Mark Wahlberg but it was widely panned by critics. Moreover, it did not fare well in the U.S where it grossed less than a third of its total earnings. But, the losses there was made up for by its sales overseas making it a huge success at the box office in 2014.

The list of the best performing films of 2014, compiled and released by film website Box Office Mojo, indicates that it was a good year for comic book heroes with X-Men, Spider-Man and Captain America - all of them performed well.

The two films that topped the U.S box office chart namely, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One', did not do well overseas, and barely managed to double their money. But, Peter Jackson's final Hobbit movie, 'The Battle of the Five Armies', could not make it to the list of top ten - it was at number 11 when reports last came in.
