Top 1% Will Be Richer than the Other 99% by the Year 2016 Says Oxfam
New reports are claiming that the average wealth per adult in the top 5% is $2.7 million, compared to the lower 95% with an average wealth per adult of $3,851. This is the most staggering wealth gap recorded till date.
"The scale of global inequality is quite simply staggering and despite the issues shooting up the global agenda, the gap between the richest and the rest is widening fast," Oxfam executive director Winnie Byanyima said.
Byanyima, who is co-chair at the Davos World Economic Forum taking place Wednesday through Friday, is urging leaders to address "vested interests that stand in the way of a fairer and more prosperous world."
Oxfam urged states to tackle tax evasion, improve public services and tax capital gains rather than labour. Introducing a minimum wage and ensuring an equitable distribution of wealth is vital to less wealth disparity.
Recently the Pope had also brought the issue of capitalistic wealth, and the greed of business that indentures the public to debt. Urging businesses to act more responsibly towards the public and steer away from the path of greed.
Some may have thought this was just over reacting, but Oxfam has made it quite apparent that this problem is very real, and if nothing is done about it, it's only going to get worse.
The rising inequality will be competing with other global crises including terrorist threats in Europe, and the West and renewed fears of financial turmoil.
