Thomas Gilbert Death News: Hedge Fund Founder Killed by Son

Thomas Gilbert was 70-years-old when he was shot to death in his Manhattan apartment on Sunday night. The crime scene was staged to look like a suicide, but the Wainscott Capital Partners founder may have been murdered.

At 10:45 pm Sunday, the NYPD took Gilbert's son, 30-year-old Tommy Gilbert, into custody. He was charged with homicide and criminal possession of a weapon. Investigators say that Tommy murdered the senior Gilbert with a .40 caliber Glock 22 and then left it in the bedroom to deceive detectives.

"The gun was resting on his chest with his left hand covering it," NYPD Chief of Investigations Robert Boyce reported.

On the fateful afternoon, Tommy walked into his parents' home and asked his mother to get him something to eat. Although Mrs. Gilbert "had a bad feeling," she left the room. When she returned to the apartment, her husband was dead.

Chief Boyce said that the police waited until Tommy reached his home address before entering on a search warrant. Loose bullets and two unused magazines that matched the murder weapon were found upon entering. The evidence was enough for the police to begin questioning the murder suspect.

Tommy Gilbert has been arrested before, although he has never been incarcerated for his actions. The Hedge Fund heir was arrested in September for violating an order of protection, and has a hearing scheduled for February. On a side note, he was also arrested in 2007 on drug charges.

In the meantime, the senior Gilbert will be remembered for his "civility [and] caring", according to neighbor Pierre Gazarian. "That makes the loss for some of us that much more painful," he said in a statement.
