'The Voice' Cast News: Anthony Riley Passes Away from Possible Suicide
Anthony Riley, a street performer who was featured on Season 8 of NBC's hit talent show, The Voice, was found dead in the basement of a Philadelphia apartment where he was staying.
Reports claim that the 28-year-old artist's death was a suspected suicide.
According to claims from the Philadelphia Inquirer, Riley left the series in order to deal with his substance abuse issues, but it is unclear whether this had anything to do with his death.
Riley had been a performer on the streets of Philadelphia for the last several years, and rose to stardom on The Voice in January 2015.
For his audition, he performed "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown, and all four of the judges, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams, turned their chairs around immediately.
Riley made history, as this was the quickest any of the judges had ever turned around for a contestant.
Riley chose Pharrell as his coach, but after winning the first battle of the series, he revealed to producers that he was battling substance abuse issues, and chose to leave the show in order to enter a rehab facility in Philadelphia.
In March, Riley had completed the rehabilitation program and was working on an album.
"It's tough, because everyone's just finding out and I've been moving forward," said Riley to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Riley's memorial will be open to the public, as his sister told the Philadelphia Inquirer,
"Everybody knew him. He couldn't walk two steps without someone saying, 'Anthony, how you doin?'"
