‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 7 Spoilers: With Elena Gone, Damon Will Have More Freedom [VIDEO]

When the supernatural television drama series 'The Vampire Diaries' premieres on The CW, Mystic Falls may possibly require another protection spell. In fact, the hit series was somewhat shaken up in its Season 6 finale when original cast member Nina Dobrev quit the show. Since her character, Elena Gilbert, was among the favorites of the show, her departure signifies an unsafe new twist for the remaining characters, reports IB Times.

Fans of 'The Vampire Diaries' have already begun wondering how the loss of Elena will affect the series. Earlier, talking to TV Guide, Ian Somerhalder has teased that Season 7 would feature "dark, sexy, edgy, volatile stories" - something similar to those of the series Season 1 and 2. During a panel at the 2015 ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, recently, 'Vampire Diaries' co-creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson expanded on that.

According to the report, Plec teased the audience in Austin saying, "What is the Season 1 version of Damon? The Season 1 version of Damon is the straight villain with what we learned was an obsession with a woman who just happened to look like our lead woman." The co-producer of the series went on to add, "And then over time that grew into a love story and it grew into a hero story and it grew into a redemption story. So, he went though all those chapters. He went through redemption. He went through hero - at least partially. The root of him as a sassy, 'take no prisoners, do what you got to do to get it done,' anti-hero is still very much there."

According to Plec, the upcoming season of 'The Vampire Diaries' is all about showing a side which viewers haven't witnessed in a short time. Damon needed to be the "perfect boyfriend" as well as an "ideal mate," but now all that is thrown out the window since Elena is acting as sleeping beauty, she added.

Meanwhile, 'The Vampire Diaries' fans will recall that Kai (Chris Wood) put Elena in a sleeping spell during the finale. Now, Elena will remain in a coma-like state as long as Bonnie (Kat Graham) lives. In fact, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) was faced with a dilemma regarding making a decision whether to save Elena or save Bonnie and he eventually he chose Bonnie.

Plec said, "He now has more freedom to kind of be messy with his choices," and added, "I think you'll see a darker Damon with the sort of wisdom of his experience, but a freedom to act out as he may feel like he needs to."

On the other hand, Williamson said that this twist is actually another way to "complicate" the character as well as the show. But it does not denote that 'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7 will feel like a repeat of Season 1. The co-creator said that it will "feel completely unlike what we've seen before."
